What is Yoga Nidra and What Can I Expect During the Practice?

Yoga Nidra is sometime known as yogic sleep though the aim is to remain awake and aware throughout the practice, even as your body fully relaxes. However if you do fall asleep I trust that Yoga Nidra is simply bringing you what you need today in the present moment.

Prepare your Yoga Nidra space or your ‘rest nest’ by finding a quiet, comfortable space where you won’t be disturbed, lie on your back in Savasana (corpse pose), close your eyes and allow your body to relax. You may find the support of additional pillows, eye mask, a blanket & the scent of lavender essential oils diffusing in the room help deepen your practice. Then, the only thing you have to do is follow the instructions I provide as I guide you through the normal stages of Yoga Nidra: intension setting (Sankalpa), breath awareness, body scan and visualisation which in this session is inspired by a peaceful valley of lavender fields. Instructions are provided in the introduction section of the recording, with the practice beginning at the 4 min mark.

 

What is the science behind the practice and what are the benefits?

Yoga Nidra involves physiological and neurological shifts that occur during the practice, primarily by activating the parasympathetic nervous system to promote deep relaxation and reduce stress. It guides the mind through various brain wave states, shifting from the active beta waves to the calmer alpha waves (linked to the subconscious) and deeper theta and delta waves (found in deep sleep) while maintaining conscious awareness. This state of conscious rest, known as the hypnagogic state, facilitates stress reduction, improves neuroplasticity, enhances self-awareness, and can lead to profound physical and emotional healing.
